Cockapoos, Cavapoos and Labradoodles are some of the most popular dogs we groom here at The Hair of the Hound.
They’re adorable, friendly and have that classic fluffy “teddy bear” look that so many owners love.
But one thing many people don’t realise before getting a doodle is that their coats require a lot of maintenance.
As a groomer, doodle coats are some of the most challenging we work with – but with the right routine, they can be kept beautiful and manageable.
Here’s what every doodle owner should know.
Doodle Coats Mat Very Easily
Most doodles inherit a mix of coat types from their parent breeds.
This often creates a dense, curly or wavy coat that tangles very easily.
Because the hair grows continuously (similar to a poodle coat), mats can form quickly if the coat isn’t brushed thoroughly.
Matting can become uncomfortable for dogs and, in severe cases, the kindest option is often to clip the coat shorter to remove it.
Brushing Isn’t Always Enough
Many owners brush their doodle regularly but still end up with matting.
This usually happens because the brush is only going over the top layer of coat.
To properly maintain a doodle coat, the hair needs to be brushed all the way to the skin using a slicker brush and metal comb.
This ensures there are no hidden tangles underneath the surface.
Regular Grooming Is Essential
For most doodles, we recommend grooming every 6–8 weeks.
This helps keep the coat manageable and prevents matting from building up.
Some owners prefer shorter grooming schedules if they like their dog kept very fluffy.
Regular grooming also allows us to maintain that classic teddy bear style that so many doodle owners love.
Coat Changes Can Make Grooming Harder
Many doodles go through a coat change between 6–12 months old.
During this stage, the puppy coat begins to transition into the adult coat, which can cause increased matting.
This is completely normal but usually means grooming and brushing need to be more frequent during this time.
The Right Home Care Makes All The Difference
Keeping a doodle coat healthy between grooms really comes down to good brushing and the right tools.
A slicker brush, metal comb and conditioning spray can make grooming at home much easier.
If you’re unsure what products to use, your groomer will always be happy to recommend tools that work well for your dog’s coat.
A Grooming Routine That Works For Your Dog
Every doodle coat is slightly different, so grooming schedules can vary depending on the dog and the style you prefer.
